This Bolo Asan guide helps UAE residents who hold a valid Emirates ID card. You can update Emirates ID details when your phone number, email or home address changes. It covers changes on a valid card. It does not cover card renewal or a lost card replacement.
Bolo Asan takes you through each contact update step. It also points you to the right route for other record changes, such as a new passport number or a name change. The guide covers online steps, where to get help, fees, the reporting deadline, common mistakes and request tracking.
Which details you can change on your Emirates ID
ICP lists its Data Update service on its interactive services page. The Data Update service covers three contact fields. You can change your phone number, email address and home address. You update Emirates ID details in this service when a contact field changes.
Other changes follow a different route. A new passport number, a job title change and other residence record changes sit outside the Data Update service. They go through ICP residence record services. A name change, a nationality change and a marital status change also sit outside the Data Update service. ICP or your sponsor confirms the right service and the papers for those cases.
This guide focuses on Data Update and briefly explains where to check the requirements for other record changes.
How to update Emirates ID details online
You can update Emirates ID details online through the ICP Smart Services website. You can also use the UAEICP app for the same work. You must use the personal account required for your request. For family members, ICP requires the sponsor’s or head of family’s account.
- Sign in to ICP Smart Services with UAE Pass using the personal account required for your request. For a family member, use the sponsor’s or head of family’s account.
- You open the Data Update service from the service list.
- You enter the details the portal asks for.
- You type your new phone number, email or address in the right fields.
- You follow the verification steps the portal shows on screen.
- You check every detail on the screen before you pay.
- You pay the fee the portal shows on the payment screen.
- You submit the request and you save the application reference number.
Keep your phone nearby in case the portal asks you to verify your number. A wrong number can stall the request at that step.
Get help in person to update Emirates ID details
ICP lists its website and UAEICP app as the channels for Data Update. If you need help, contact ICP or an accredited typing office first. Confirm whether they can assist with your specific request before travelling. Follow the official service instructions for any documents or checks required.
If the office asks you to visit, take the documents ICP asks for in your case. The office may ask for papers such as these.
- Your original Emirates ID card
- Your passport and a clear copy of your passport
- Any other paper the service asks for in your case
For family members, ICP requires the sponsor’s or head of family’s personal account for a Data Update request. For a child, guardian or other representative, check the authorisation rules for the specific service before applying.
Bolo Asan suggests you contact ICP before travelling to ask which documents you need for your case and to check whether an in-person visit works for your case.
How to change the mobile number on your Emirates ID
Some ICP services use your registered mobile number for text messages or verification codes. Follow the instructions shown in the official service. UAE Pass and many other services also send login codes to that same number. If you use your registered number for verification, make sure your contact details are current.
If you keep an old number on your record, you miss OTP messages. You may also lose access to key accounts. Some banks and government services may use your registered phone number for verification. Update your number separately with each provider that holds your old contact details.
The portal flow stays the same as the online flow above. You log in, type the new number, follow the checks on screen and submit the request.
Scammers call people and pretend they work for ICP. Never share your bank PIN, password or one-time verification code with an unverified caller. If a caller claims to represent ICP and asks for sensitive information, end the call and contact ICP through its official channels. Use only the official ICP website, the UAEICP app or an ICP centre.
If you lost your old number, contact ICP through its official support channels. You can call the ICP call centre on 600522222. You can also use the help options on the ICP website. Follow the steps ICP gives you for your case.
You can read our UAE mobile plans and SIM card guide if you plan to take a new number. The guide helps you compare plans before you pick a SIM.
What to do after you renew your passport
If your passport expires, contact your embassy or consulate about renewal. Then ask ICP whether you need to update your residence record. The Data Update service does not cover passport numbers. Ask ICP which service you should use to update your passport details and whether your residence record needs to change.
You keep a copy of your old passport with your file for later checks. You carry your new passport for any visit the service asks for. You can also read our Dubai residence visa renewal guide if your visa renewal falls near your passport renewal.
Keep your passport details current with the relevant authorities and service providers. Check with your bank or airline if the change affects a service or booking.
How name and marital status changes work
A name change or a marital status change touches your core identity record. These changes fall outside the Data Update service. Ask ICP which service applies to your case and whether your sponsor must take part.
You may need a marriage certificate for a marital status change. You may need an official name change paper or a court paper for a name change. ICP confirms the exact papers and the steps for your case before you submit anything.
You copy your name letter by letter from your passport. Small spelling gaps between documents can cause delays and returns.
ICP may issue a new card after an approved change to the details on your card. ICP confirms the next steps for your case.
Fees when you update Emirates ID details
Check the fee for the Data Update service on the official ICP Data Update service page before you start. The portal also shows the fee for your category on the payment screen before you pay. You pay only the amount on that screen for the online service. Check the current fee on ICP’s service page before you apply.
If you use a typing office or another service provider, ask whether it charges an additional service fee. Bolo Asan advises you to ask for a breakdown of any additional charges before you pay.
ICP does not publish a fixed completion time for a Data Update on its public pages. Do not mix this service with new card issuance. ICP lists a standard completion time of 5 days for new identity card issuance on its service details page. Your own update may finish in a few days or your case may take longer if ICP needs more checks.
The 30-day reporting deadline and the late fine
UAE government guidance says you must report your change within one month when the reporting rule covers it. Check ICP’s guidance to confirm whether the rule covers your change and which service you should use.
ICP lists a fine of AED 20 for each day of delay, up to AED 1,000, for late reporting of prescribed personal or civil data changes. ICP publishes this fine on its identity card service page. The listed rule covers all categories and age groups.
The UAE government page also describes a separate late-renewal penalty of AED 20 per day, up to AED 1,000, when a card holder misses the applicable renewal deadline. This is different from the penalty for late reporting of prescribed personal-data changes.
ICP also has a service for requesting an exemption from delay fees. You can apply through that service. ICP reviews exemption requests under its applicable rules. Submitting a request does not guarantee a waiver of the fee.
Common mistakes people make when they update Emirates ID details
Incorrect details, missing documents and incomplete verification can delay a request. A slow check at each step helps you avoid these slips.
- Check the reporting deadline.
- Do not share sensitive information with unverified callers.
- Match your name spelling to the relevant official document.
- Complete every verification step that ICP requests.
- Update other organisations separately when necessary.
- Save your application reference number.
What to update after your Emirates ID record changes
Update Emirates ID details with ICP first. Then share the new details with the other offices that need them. Contact each organisation separately if you need to update the information it holds.
Tell your bank about a new phone number, email or address after ICP updates your record. Tell your mobile operator if you need to update the contact details linked to your SIM. Bolo Asan recommends that you keep a copy of the update confirmation in your own file.
Update your employer, insurer, landlord or tenancy office if the change affects the information they hold about you. Update the relevant records soon after ICP changes your details.
Bolo Asan checklist before you submit
Run through this short list before you tap submit or leave a centre. The list catches small errors while you still have time to fix them.
- You check your name spelling against your passport.
- You check your new phone number digit by digit.
- You keep your supporting documents ready in clear copies.
- You note the fee on the payment screen before you pay.
- You save the application reference number in a safe place.
Bolo Asan advises you to save the application reference number in two places. A photo on your phone and a note in your file both work well.
Track your request through your ICP personal account or the official tracking options listed on the ICP website. Your application reference number starts with 010 and differs from your Emirates ID number. Use the reference number to track your request through your ICP account or the official tracking service. The ICP FAQ page explains tracking and shares the call centre numbers for extra help.
You call 600522222 inside the UAE if you need help with tracking. You call +971600522222 outside the UAE for the same help.
Questions Bolo Asan readers ask about Emirates ID updates
Can I update Emirates ID details from outside the UAE?
You may be able to submit a Data Update request from outside the UAE if you can access the required ICP service and UAE Pass. Confirm any additional requirements with ICP before applying.
Will I get a new card after my update?
Data Update covers phone number, email and address. Check with ICP if you need to know whether a particular change affects your card or only your electronic record.
Can I update my details if my residence visa expires soon?
If your residence visa has expired or ICP cancelled it, check the requirements for your specific ICP service before applying. Contact ICP if you are unsure whether your current status affects the request.
What happens if ICP rejects or returns my request?
Read the reason ICP shows and follow the instructions for that application. If you can correct or resubmit the existing request, follow those steps. Contact ICP if the next action is unclear.
Can someone else update Emirates ID details for me?
For Data Update requests involving family members, ICP requires the sponsor’s or head of family’s personal account. For a child, guardian or other representative, check the authorisation rules for the specific service before applying.
Do children need updates too?
Yes. Parents or guardians report a change for a child. ICP states that the reporting rule and delay fine apply across all categories and age groups.
Can I keep using my card during the update?
A Data Update request does not by itself confirm the validity of your card for every purpose. Check the expiry date and contact ICP if you are unsure whether you can continue using your card during a pending request.
How long does an Emirates ID update take?
ICP does not publish a fixed completion time for a Data Update on its public pages. Your update may take longer if ICP asks for more checks or a centre visit. ICP lists a standard completion time of 5 days for new identity card issuance, and that figure belongs to a different service.
This guide provides general information and does not replace official ICP guidance. ICP can change rules and fees at any time and ICP makes the final decision on every request. You should check the official ICP website before you apply. Confirm your case with ICP if any detail feels unclear.
