Spain Non-Lucrative Visa from UAE

The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa lets you live in Spain without work. You live there on your own money, at your own pace. Your money can come from savings, rent, dividends, or a pension.

You apply while you still live in the UAE. You file your papers at the BLS centre in Dubai. You do not need to fly to your home country first.

This Bolo Asan guide covers the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa from start to finish. It covers who can apply and the money you need. Bolo Asan wrote it in simple words for UAE residents.

Quick Answer: The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa lets UAE residents live in Spain without work. You must support yourself on savings or steady passive income. Passive income means money that arrives without a job. You apply in person at the BLS centre in Dubai.

Who Can Apply

You can apply if you live in the UAE legally. You must show enough money to live in Spain without work. The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa suits retired people and people who live on rent or dividends. It also suits people who take a career break and fund it from savings.

This visa does not suit anyone who plans to work in Spain. Work of any kind breaks the core rule of this visa. This visa fits a slow life in Spain. You enjoy the country at your own pace.

Family Can Join You

Your spouse or unmarried partner can apply with you. Dependent means they rely on you for money and care. Your dependent children can apply with you too. Your dependent parents can join if they form part of your family unit.

The whole family can move under one application. Each family member still files some papers of their own. Children and parents need their own papers too. The family link proof differs for each person.

Where You File in the UAE

You file this visa from the UAE if you live here legally. Dubai is the place where you file it. Do not go to a BLS office in Abu Dhabi for this visa.

The Abu Dhabi page names Dubai as the filing place. So book an appointment at the Dubai centre before you go.

UAE Papers Need Special Stamps

Your UAE good conduct certificate needs two stamps before Spain accepts it. The UAE Ministry of Interior stamps it first. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamps it next.

Then you need a sworn Spanish translation of the certificate. Spain accepts only this kind of translation for your file. A normal translation from any office will not work here. Start your translations early to avoid delays at filing.

Spain also asks for your UAE residence permits from the last five years. Keep a copy of each permit ready before you start.

UAE citizens can visit Spain for a short trip without a visa. A long stay still needs a residence visa like this one. The short trip exemption does not help people who plan to live in Spain.

Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Money Rules

The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa money bar follows IPREM, which is Spain’s official income index. Spain updates this index from time to time.

You need 400% of IPREM each month for yourself. You need 100% of IPREM more for each family member. These rates must cover the full first year of your stay.

In 2026, the main applicant needs 2,400 euros a month. Each family member adds 600 euros a month. That works out to 28,800 euros for one year for a single person.

Each family member adds 7,200 euros more for the year. A family of three needs 43,200 euros for the year. The New Delhi page lists the 2026 figures.

Bolo Asan lists the 2026 money bar in the table below.

PersonMoney Each MonthMoney for One Year
Main applicant2,400 euros28,800 euros
Each family member600 euros7,200 euros

Use this table to plan your budget for one full year.

You can show savings that cover the full year. You can also show regular income that arrives each month. Pension, rent, dividends, and interest all count as income here.

Spain checks your bank papers with care, so show clear statements. Ask your bank to stamp each statement for the last 12 months.

Your funds must last the full first year. Spain wants proof for all twelve months, not just one good month. A couple needs more than a single person. Each extra person lifts the yearly total by 7,200 euros.

Note: The money bar can change when Spain updates IPREM. Check the Abu Dhabi page again before you file.

No Work at All

This visa gives you no right to work at all. You cannot take a job in Spain on this visa. You cannot run a business in Spain on this visa either. You also cannot work online for a foreign firm while you live in Spain.

Spain treats remote work as work too. The Washington page states that this ban covers remote work as well.

Remote workers need a different visa instead. Spain offers a digital nomad visa for people who work for firms outside Spain. Do not mix the two visas up.

Spain closed its golden visa on 3 April 2025. The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa now serves as one alternative route. It suits people who want to live in Spain without work. If you want a job in Spain, read the work visa guide instead.

Important: The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa never allows work in Spain. A job offer does not change this rule.

Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Papers

This Bolo Asan list covers Spain Non-Lucrative Visa papers from the Abu Dhabi page. Gather each paper below before you book your appointment.

  • Fill two forms in full and sign each form before you file. EX-01 is the residence form for this visa.
  • Your passport must stay valid for at least one year. It needs two blank pages. Spain rejects passports older than ten years.
  • Bring one recent colour photo with a light background. Face the camera straight in the photo. Do not wear dark glasses in the photo.
  • The BLS checklist asks for bank statements from the last 12 months. Ask your bank to stamp them. Make sure the statements show your name and balance.
  • You need health insurance from a firm that works in Spain. The plan must cover your full stay in Spain. It must have no deductibles and no co-payments, so the plan pays in full.
  • You also need a short motivation letter for your move. It states your reasons for moving to Spain. It also names the city where you plan to live.
  • You need a criminal record certificate for the last five years. Every adult must file this paper. Bring certificates from each place you lived in during that time.
  • You need a medical certificate in the consulate’s own wording. It must state that you carry no serious public health disease. Attach a sworn Spanish translation to it.
  • You need proof that you live in the consular district. The district is the area your consulate covers. Your UAE residence visa proves this fact.
  • You need Form 790-052 for the residence permit fee. Tick box 2.1 on this form. The visa fee itself equals 80 euros.
  • Some nationalities pay a different visa fee for this visa. Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom face different rates. Ask the consular office about your fee before you pay.

Each family member files most of the same papers. These include the forms, the photo, the passport, the insurance, and the fee papers. They also file proof of the family link.

Birth certificates prove the link for children. Marriage certificates prove the link for a spouse. Adult children must also prove that they depend on you.

Tip: Translate each foreign paper into Spanish before you file. Legalize each paper first and then translate it. Missing translations slow your file down.

Check each paper twice before you book. One missing paper can slow your file down.

How to Apply

The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa process follows a fixed order from start to finish. The steps below walk you through it.

  1. Gather each paper from the list above. Check each paper twice before you move on.
  2. Legalize foreign papers through the right chain. Translate each paper into Spanish next.
  3. Book an appointment at the BLS centre in Dubai. You cannot file without an appointment.
  4. Go in person on the set date. A parent can file for a minor child.
  5. Take originals plus one copy of each paper. BLS gives you a receipt code at the desk. You can use this code to track your file online.
  6. Spain can ask for more papers after you file. Spain can also call you for an interview. Answer each request fast and in full.
  7. The legal decision period lasts three months. This period can grow longer in some cases. A refusal always arrives in writing with reasons.
  8. Collect your visa in person within one month. The month starts the day after approval news reaches you. Your visa stays valid for 90 days.
  9. Travel to Spain inside those 90 days. Apply for your Foreigner Identity Card within one month. This card proves your residence in Spain.

Bolo Asan built this checklist from the Abu Dhabi page. Keep your receipt code safe until you collect your visa.

How Long It Lasts

The first permit lasts one year. Each renewal after that lasts two years. You renew inside Spain, not at a consulate abroad.

You must live in Spain for more than 183 days a year. Spain checks this rule at renewal time. Keep your insurance and funds ready for renewal too.

After five years of legal residence, you can seek long-term residence. Long-term residence drops the income test of this visa. This change makes later renewals simpler.

Bolo Asan advises clean records from day one in Spain. Renewals need the same care as the first file. Start your renewal file before your permit ends. Keep fresh bank papers and insurance ready for that file.

Short Trips in Europe

You can also take short trips to other Schengen states with this visa. Read the Schengen visa rules for short trips in Europe.

Mistakes to Avoid

Spain Non-Lucrative Visa mistakes often come from small points. Bolo Asan lists the most common mistakes below so you can avoid them.

  • Do not file at a BLS office in Abu Dhabi. Dubai is the only BLS place for this visa.
  • Do not plan remote work on this visa. Remote work needs the digital nomad visa instead.
  • Do not file papers in English or Arabic only. Spain wants sworn Spanish translations with them.
  • Do not let your passport run short. It must stay valid for at least one year.
  • Do not buy weak health insurance. Your plan must cover the full stay with no co-payments.
