You live in the UAE and you still have money links with Pakistan. Maybe you own a house there or hold a bank account there. At some point someone tells you to file a Pakistan tax return. This guide shows you the official way, step by step.
Bolo Asan wrote this guide for Pakistanis who live in the UAE. Every fact here comes from the Federal Board of Revenue. People call it the FBR for short. The FBR is the Pakistan government office that runs tax work. You can do this job online from your home in the UAE for yourself.
What a Pakistan Tax Return Is
A Pakistan tax return is a yearly form for the FBR. The form tells the FBR what you earned in one tax year. It also tells the FBR what tax someone already cut from your money. Banks and buyers cut tax at the time they pay you. The return puts all these facts in one place.
Pakistan uses a tax year of twelve months. The FBR says a tax year ends on 30 June each year. The year name comes from the calendar year of that June date. So the year from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 is Tax Year 2026. Your Pakistan tax return always covers one such year.
You file every return through one online system. The system name is IRIS. FBR calls it IRIS 2.0 on its login page. IRIS is the main way to file a return online. You open the IRIS site at iris.fbr.gov.pk. You log in and you file the return there.
Who This Guide Fits
This guide fits a Pakistani who now lives in the UAE. You hold a NICOP or a normal CNIC card. The CNIC is the identity card for people who live in Pakistan. NICOP is the identity card for Pakistanis who live abroad. You may earn money in Pakistan in one of these ways.
- Rent from a house or shop in Pakistan
- Profit from a bank account in Pakistan
- A pension from Pakistan
- Pay from a job you did inside Pakistan
- A share of profit from a Pakistan company
You may also own land or a flat in Pakistan. A Pakistan tax return can still matter for you then. Big land or a city flat can alone mean you must file. Your income and your own facts decide that point. The later parts of this guide explain why. Read the whole guide before you decide your own case. Only the FBR can confirm the rules for your own facts.
Resident or Non-Resident
The FBR first asks one simple question about you. The FBR calls the two places resident and non-resident.
- Pakistan law, section 82, gives the tests for a resident person.
- Stay in Pakistan 183 days or more in one tax year.
- That stay alone makes you a resident for that year.
- Your stays can be one long stay or many short stays.
- A Pakistan government worker posted abroad also counts as resident.
- A citizen of Pakistan is also resident in two more cases.
- First, you stay in no other country over 182 days in the tax year.
- Second, you are not a tax resident of any other country.
- Either one of these two cases is enough on its own.
- An old test with 120 days no longer sits in this law.
- If no case above fits you, you are non-resident.
- A UAE visa alone does not decide your Pakistan tax place.
- Your own days and your own facts decide your place.
- Keep a count of your days in each country for the year.
- The FBR or a tax expert can confirm your own case.
What Counts as Pakistan Source Income
The FBR sorts income by the place it comes from. Income from Pakistan counts as Pakistan source income. The FBR lists the common types on its basics page. Here are the types in simple words.
- Pay for work you did inside Pakistan, even if the pay came from abroad
- Pay from the Pakistan government, wherever you did the work
- A dividend from a company based in Pakistan
- Profit from a business carried on inside Pakistan
- Profit on a loan from a person who lives in Pakistan
- Rent from land or a building inside Pakistan
- A pension or yearly payment from a resident payer
The FBR gives one short rule for all other income. Any income that is not Pakistan source income is foreign source income. If you count as resident, your return also takes in foreign income. The FBR list names pay for work done inside Pakistan. Pay from a UAE job falls on the foreign side of the FBR line. Your Pakistan tax return focuses on your Pakistan side facts. Show your Pakistan income and the tax cut on it. Your own facts and your resident place decide if you must file. They also decide what tax you owe. Keep your UAE papers safe if the FBR asks later.
What You Need Before You Start
The FBR asks for some facts before you register online. The FBR calls this first step e-enrollment. Keep these things ready before you open the IRIS site.
- Your CNIC or NICOP number
- A mobile phone number that you use now
- An email address that you check often
- Your nationality
- Your home address
- Your accounting period
- Your main work or business activity
Some readers need three extra facts as well. Salary earners need the name and tax number of the employer. Landlords need the address of the property that earns rent. Business owners need the business name and business address. The FBR also asks for one scan during full registration. You need a bank paper that shows your own bank account. The paper name is a certificate of maintenance of account. Your bank in Pakistan can give you this paper. Business owners add papers for the business place. They add proof of rent or ownership of that place. They also add a paid power bill from the last three months.
How to Register on IRIS
Registration is the first step of a Pakistan tax return. The FBR says a person counts as registered after e-enrollment on IRIS. E-enrollment gives you a tax number and a password. For a person, the tax number is the CNIC number itself. Your 13-digit CNIC works as your NTN. NTN means National Tax Number. Companies and groups get a fresh 7-digit number instead.
Online registration on IRIS is open to persons only. Groups and companies cannot register fully online. Their main officer must visit a tax office in Pakistan. You live in the UAE, so the online way fits you. Follow these steps on the IRIS site.
- Open iris.fbr.gov.pk on your computer
- Start the registration for a new person
- Type your CNIC or NICOP number with care
- Add your mobile number and your email address
- Fill in the facts from the list in the part above
- Send the form and save your password in a safe place
The FBR sets some clear rules for this online step. Your SIM must stand in your own CNIC name. Your email address must be your own personal address. You also need a computer, a scanner and an internet connection. The FBR posts a user guide for new users. Read that guide on the FBR site before you start. Some old filers hold an NTN but hold no IRIS login. The IRIS site has a link for that case. The link name is E-enrollment for Registered Person. That link gives login access to people with a number already.
How to File the Return in IRIS
You file the Pakistan tax return after you log into IRIS. First you register, then you log in, then you file. The FBR return page shows the forms you complete in IRIS. There is no paper form for the online path. The whole return lives inside your IRIS account.
Work through the return in this order.
- Log into IRIS with your number and password
- Pick the tax year for your return
- Add your Pakistan income under the right head
- Add the tax that banks or buyers already cut
- A resident person also files a wealth statement with the return.
- A non-resident does not file it with the return.
- The FBR can still ask any person for one by a letter.
- The wealth statement lists what you own and what you owe.
- Make its figures match the figures in your return.
- IRIS does not accept the return if these figures do not match.
- Check every figure once more with your papers
- Submit the return inside IRIS
- Check that your forms moved to the Completed Task folder.
Salaried filers may also need Declaration form 114(I) in IRIS.
The FBR sorts income under five heads on its basics page. The heads are salary and income from property. The list also holds business income and capital gains. The last head is income from other sources. Put each part of your income under its own head. Your bank profit falls under Income from Other Sources. Your rent falls under the property head. Keep your bank tax papers beside you at this step. Banks give a paper that shows profit and tax cut. That paper helps you fill the return with true figures.
Some returns end with tax still due to the FBR. The IRIS site carries an e-Payments section for tax dues. The FBR site also runs a payment page named efile. You log into efile with the same login you use for IRIS. Then you open the e-Payments tab on that page. Pay only the sum your own return shows as due. Keep the payment proof with your return papers.
The Last Date for Filing
The FBR prints fixed due dates on its own site. A person must file on or before 30 September. The same date covers a group of persons. Companies get a later date of 31 December. Your Pakistan tax return follows the 30 September date. That date comes right after the tax year ends.
The FBR extends this date in some years. The FBR site showed an extension notice for Tax Year 2026. Such a notice moves the last date for that year only. Always check the FBR site updates before you file late. The IRIS login page also shows fresh notices. Never trust a date that a blog or agent tells you. Trust only the date on the FBR site itself. For Tax Year 2026, the FBR notice sets the last date as 31 October 2026. The notice is Circular No. 04 of 2026-27, dated 15 October 2026. This new date covers persons due on 30 September. Their date first moved to 15 October by Circular No. 3.
The Active Taxpayer List
The FBR keeps a list of people who file returns. The list name is the Active Taxpayer List. People call it the ATL for short. The FBR calls it a central record of online return filers. The record covers filers of the past tax year. A filed return for the past year brings a name on this list. The FBR list rules set when the name shows. A late return keeps your name off this list. An individual pays a surcharge of Rs 25,000 to join it. A written promise can replace this fee for an individual. The promise says you will buy no property for six months.
The FBR prints the list after the filing due date each year.
The list stays valid till the day after the next due date.
The FBR also updates this list every day. You can check your own name on the IRIS site. The IRIS home page holds an ATL checkbox. You can search with your tax number or CNIC. The search also takes a passport number. Check your name a few days after you file on time. A name on the ATL marks you as a filer. Banks and buyers use this list in their daily work. The list can change how much tax is cut on some deals.
A Special FBR Rule for Overseas Pakistanis
The FBR gives overseas Pakistanis one clear property benefit. The benefit covers advance tax on property deals. Two tax law sections carry the names 236C and 236K. Section 236K covers tax at the time you buy property. Section 236C covers tax at the time you sell property. A non-filer is a person who has not filed a return. A normal non-filer pays a high rate on these deals.
The FBR FAQ page sets out a route to the filer rate. The route can give the filer rate with no return filed. Two facts must hold true for you at that time. You hold a POC card or a NICOP card. POC is the Pakistan Origin Card for people of Pakistan origin. And your stay in Pakistan stays under 183 days in that tax year. The FBR runs a set way to grant this rate. The office that records your property deal starts the steps.
That office clicks the Overseas Pakistanis link on the FBR portal. The office then creates a payment slip for your tax. The system asks for your POC or NICOP number. It pulls your name and address on its own. You upload a scan of your card on that form. You also state if you are resident or non-resident there. You may upload papers that support your stated place. The slip then goes to the Commissioner’s inbox inside IRIS. The Commissioner checks the papers and approves the slip. The Commissioner then tells that office by email and SMS. After that step, the office pays your tax at the filer rate.
The FBR prints the deal rates in its own FAQ table. The rates below come from that table. The FBR says the Finance Act 2025 set these rates. These rates are advance tax cut at the time of the deal. They are not the full list of deal taxes or fees. Your final tax depends on the law and your deal.
Buyer Rates Under Section 236K
Property value | Filer | Late filer | Non-filer |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to Rs 50 million | 1.5% | 4.5% | 10.5% |
Above Rs 50 million and up to Rs 100 million | 2% | 5.5% | 14.5% |
Above Rs 100 million | 2.5% | 6.5% | 18.5% |
Seller Rates Under Section 236C
Sale amount | Filer | Late filer | Non-filer |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to Rs 50 million | 4.5% | 7.5% | 11.5% |
Above Rs 50 million and up to Rs 100 million | 5% | 8.5% | 11.5% |
Above Rs 100 million | 5.5% | 9.5% | 11.5% |
The tables show one plain fact for every reader. A filer pays far less than a non-filer on a deal. Your Pakistan tax return is the clean way to stay a filer. The special property route helps at the time of one deal. It does not put your name on the ATL. Only a filed return does that job for you. A late return also needs the surcharge step first.
Why Many Pakistanis in the UAE Still File
Some readers ask why they should file at all. Their full salary comes from a UAE job. They hold no job inside Pakistan at all. Bolo Asan does not decide that point for any reader. For some readers, filing is a legal duty, not a choice. Section 114 of the tax law lists who must file. One case is income over the tax-free limit for the year. The FBR pages just show some clear practical effects. This part lists those effects in plain words.
A filed return can put your name on the ATL under FBR rules. The property tables above show the filer gain on deals. The gain depends on the value of the property and the rate. Your own bank in Pakistan also reads the ATL. The list can change the tax cut rate on some bank work. A return also builds a clean record year by year. That record helps when you buy property later. It also helps when a bank asks for your tax history. Weigh these effects against your own facts with care. Then decide with the FBR rules in front of you.
The Tax Asaan App Option
The FBR also runs a mobile app for taxpayers. The app name is Tax Asaan. Bolo Asan gives this option one short part. The FBR page for the app shows guides and videos. One guide shows a simple salary return in the app. The app may suit a reader with simple salary facts. Most overseas readers hold bank or rent facts as well. The full IRIS site gives you the complete return. Start on the IRIS site if your case holds many parts. Keep your login details safe on both the app and site.
Mistakes That Block Filers From the UAE
Small slips block many first returns from the UAE. The FBR rules above show where these slips come from. Bolo Asan lists the main slips here for you.
- A SIM that stands in a family member’s name blocks registration
- A wrong CNIC digit blocks your login at the start
- A missed tax year choice files your facts in a wrong year
- A bank paper in a wrong name fails the account check
- A late start leaves no time to fix a small error
- Day counts with no proof weaken your status claim
Keep your passport and travel dates in one safe file. Your entry and exit stamps show your Pakistan days. NICOP holders can also show their card when needed. Such papers support the status you state in IRIS. Never guess a figure that a paper can prove. Keep the paper behind every figure you write.
Where to Get Official Help
The FBR runs a helpline for taxpayer questions. You can call from the UAE on the international number. The international helpline number is +92 51 111 772 772. Inside Pakistan, dial 051 111 772 772 for the same line. The FBR site prints the helpline hours as well. The helpline works Monday to Friday from morning to late night. The IRIS page prints the hours as 8:00 AM to 11:30 PM, Pakistan time. You can also email the helpline team for help. The email address is [email protected]. Women can use a line that the FBR keeps for them. That number is 051 9107025 on working days.
Many readers can do this work on their own. The steps on the FBR site cost no fee. A hard case may need a qualified tax expert. Hard cases cover your resident place and foreign income. They also cover property gains and old dues. Any tax you owe is apart from the free steps. Some agents also ask for your IRIS password. Never share your IRIS password with any person. Your password guards your full tax record with the FBR. The IRIS login page has a Forgot Password link for lost passwords.
How Bolo Asan Checked This Guide
Bolo Asan read the FBR pages for this guide one by one. The team read the income tax basics page in full. It also read the register, return and due date pages. The ATL page and the overseas FAQ page came next. The team took no fact from a blog or news page. Where an FBR page gave no clear answer, this guide says so. The next part lists those open points in plain words.
What Bolo Asan Could Not Confirm at First
The extension notice for Tax Year 2026 is now confirmed. It is Circular No. 04 of 2026-27, dated 15 October 2026. The Last Date part above shows its new date, 31 October 2026. We found no filing fee on FBR pages, so treat agent fee claims with care.
Questions Readers Ask Bolo Asan
Can I file a Pakistan tax return from the UAE?
Yes, you can file from your home in the UAE. The FBR runs the whole filing work online in IRIS. You register, log in and submit the return there. No FBR office visit is part of the online way.
Do I need a fresh NTN as an overseas Pakistani?
No fresh number is part of the FBR way for persons. Your 13-digit CNIC works as your tax number. E-enrollment on IRIS links that number to your login. NICOP holders use their card number in the same way.
Which date is the last date for my return?
The FBR due dates page sets 30 September as the standing date for persons. That date follows the tax year end of 30 June. For Tax Year 2026, the FBR moved the date to 31 October 2026. It moved the date by Circular No. 04 of 2026-27. It covers persons first due on 30 September. Always check the FBR site for the date of your year.
Does my UAE salary go into the Pakistan return?
The FBR basics page lists Pakistan source income types. A UAE job salary is not one of those types. The FBR calls income outside that list foreign source income. Your return focuses on your Pakistan source income facts. A resident return also counts foreign source income.
What is the Active Taxpayer List in simple words?
The ATL is the FBR record of past year return filers. The FBR prints the list after the filing due date. The FBR updates the list every day as well. You can check your name on the IRIS home page.
Can I get filer rates on a property deal with no return?
Yes, the FBR FAQ gives overseas Pakistanis a set route. You need a POC or NICOP card in hand. Your Pakistan stay must stay under 183 days in that tax year. The property office then runs the FBR portal steps for you.
My SIM stands in my father’s name. Can I register?
The FBR registration rules ask for a SIM in your own name. A SIM in a family member’s name can block the step. Get a SIM in your own CNIC name first. Then start your IRIS registration with that number.
Who can help me if IRIS shows an error?
Call the FBR helpline on +92 51 111 772 772 from the UAE. The line works Monday to Friday in Pakistan hours. You can also write to [email protected] for help. Keep your CNIC number ready when you call them.
