How to Add Dental Cover to Your Health Plan? Your health plan pays for a dental emergency today. It pays nothing for a normal check-up or a filling. Bolo Asan explains how dental cover fills that gap. First you will see what basic plans pay for. Next you will see three ways to add dental cover. Last you will see the small print that sets your bill.
What Dental Cover Means
Dental cover is one small part inside a health plan. The plan pays part of your bill at the dentist. The plan pays only for treatments on its dental list. The plan also sets a money limit for dental work each year. Plan papers call this part a dental benefit. Daman, the Abu Dhabi health insurer, calls it a dental module. The rest of your plan keeps its own separate limit.
You pay the rest of the dental bill yourself. Plan papers call your share coinsurance. A share of 30 percent means one clear thing. You pay 30 dirhams from every 100 dirhams of the bill. Bolo Asan uses these plan words through this whole guide.
What Your Basic Plan Pays for Today
Health insurance is a must for every UAE resident. Each emirate runs its own health insurance system. The Dubai and Abu Dhabi basic plans share one dental shape. They pay when teeth or gums need emergency care. They pay nothing for routine dental care in normal times.
Dubai and the Essential Benefits Plan
Dubai Health Insurance Law No. 11 of 2013 makes cover a must in Dubai. The Dubai Health Insurance Corporation regulates insurance in the emirate. The ISAHD answers page calls the Essential Benefits Plan the minimum cover in Dubai. People shorten that plan name to EBP.
One Sukoon plan table follows the DHA rules for this basic plan. The table sets a yearly limit of AED 150,000 per person. In an emergency, the plan pays for checks and treatment for teeth and gums. You pay a 20 percent share of that emergency bill. Our guide to health insurance in Dubai for expats explains the wider Dubai system.
The same table puts two dental items fully outside the basic plan. Dental prostheses sit on its list of outside services. Prostheses here means false teeth that replace lost teeth. Orthodontic treatments sit on that same outside list. Orthodontic work means braces that move teeth straight.
Abu Dhabi and the Basic Plan
The Department of Health runs health insurance in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi employers and sponsors pay for workers and their families. The family part covers one spouse and three children under 18. Our guide to Abu Dhabi health insurance requirements sets out those duties in detail.
Daman is the national health insurance company in Abu Dhabi. One Daman plan document shows the Basic Abu Dhabi Plan in full. The plan limit reaches AED 250,000 per person each year. The plan pays in full for teeth and gum care in a medical emergency. The plan territory covers the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Outside Abu Dhabi, this plan pays for emergencies only.
The Basic Package in the Other Emirates
From 1 January 2025, employers must buy a health policy for staff. The rule links the policy to residence permit issue and renewal. It covers private sector workers and domestic workers. The u.ae page on getting health insurance prices the basic package at AED 320 per year.
That policy runs for two years. It covers people from age 1 to age 64. People over 64 fill a medical disclosure form and attach recent medical reports. u.ae lists a 20 percent share for hospital care under this package. That share stops at AED 500 per visit and AED 1,000 per year. Clinic care carries a 25 percent share with a cap of AED 100 per visit. Medicines carry a 30 percent share with a yearly cap of AED 1,500. The u.ae page prints no dental line in this package list. Your own policy summary holds the true dental answer for your plan.
Why Routine Dental Sits Outside Basic Plans
Regulators build basic plans as a safety net for big health needs. The Department of Health in Abu Dhabi sets the basic plan benefits. The Department also sets the list of services outside that plan. An insurer cannot cut the basic plan without Department approval.
The Department of Health insurers manual describes a second product type for Abu Dhabi. An enhanced product keeps every basic benefit in place. An enhanced product then adds cover for services outside the basic list. Dental cover enters a plan through that enhancement door. Dubai uses the same idea with different plan words. The Essential Benefits Plan sets the floor there. Plans above that floor can add extra benefits such as a dental benefit.
Three Ways to Add Dental Cover
Bolo Asan groups the routes into three clear ways. The right way depends on one simple fact. The fact is the name of the person who owns your plan.
Way One Through Your Employer
Dubai employers pay the full premium for each worker. The ISAHD office states this rule in plain words. An employer can never take that cost from your salary. Your company owns the group plan contract at work. Only your company can change the benefits inside that contract.
Ask the human resources team before the renewal month. Ask them to add dental cover for the next plan year. In Abu Dhabi, your employer also covers your spouse and children. One family request can add the benefit for the whole house.
Way Two Upgrade a Plan You Buy
Many residents buy cover for family members with their own money. Dubai sponsors must insure their resident dependents. The buyer of a family plan chooses its benefit level. You can pick an enhanced plan with a dental benefit at purchase. You can also move up to such a plan at renewal.
The Abu Dhabi manual sets one price rule for enhanced plans. Market prices set the premium for an enhanced product. An insurer cannot sell an enhanced plan at the basic price or below it. So an upgrade always costs more than the basic product.
Way Three Pick a Plan With a Dental Module
Some insurers sell this cover as an add-on module. Daman prints the rule inside its enhanced plan document. Dental and optical benefits are optional benefits in that document. Optical cover comes only together with dental cover there. You switch the module on when you buy or renew the plan. The module then runs inside the same policy.
What a Dental Benefit Pays For
Plan lists differ in small ways from insurer to insurer. The lists still share one core shape. One Daman plan document lists these dental services.
- A talk and check with the dentist
- Dental X-rays of your teeth
- Fillings in silver colour or tooth colour
- Taking out a bad tooth
- Root canal treatment inside the tooth root
- Cleaning and polishing once a year
- Medicines the dentist prescribes for that work
The same document pays the full cost after an accident hurts your teeth. A Sukoon plan table in Dubai names almost the same set. Its list names consultation, extraction, fillings and root canal work. It also names scaling, X-rays, antibiotics and cleaning care.
The Small Print That Sets Your Bill
The Dental Limit Stands Alone
Dental money runs in its own small pot each year. The Sukoon table sets its dental benefit at AED 500 per person per year. The Daman dental module sets AED 4,500 per person per year. Both figures belong to those two plan documents only. Your own plan can set a higher or lower figure. When your dental pot runs empty, you pay the full bill yourself.
Your Share at the Dentist
The Sukoon dental benefit takes a 30 percent share from you per visit. A follow-up visit within seven days carries no share under that table. The Daman module pays 80 percent of the dental bill. You pay the other 20 percent under that module. Always ask for your share before the dentist starts work.
Only Clinics on the Plan List
The Sukoon table pays its dental benefit at named dental clinics only. The plan calls them designated dental network providers. Outside that list, the plan pays nothing for normal dental work. A visit outside the list can leave the whole bill with you.
Approval Before Big Dental Work
Both plan documents ask for approval before dental work starts. Plan papers call this step prior approval or pre-authorization. The clinic sends your treatment plan to the insurer first. The insurer answers yes or no before work begins. A true emergency works the other way round. Daman asks members to inform the company within 24 hours after emergency care.
Waiting Periods in Plain Words
A waiting period is a set of months at the start of a plan. The plan pays nothing for some care during those months. Dubai basic plan papers set a six month wait for old health problems. The wait applies when a person takes cover for the first time. A person with unbroken earlier cover faces no such wait. The same papers refuse cover for health problems a person hides. A sudden medical emergency gets cover from the very first day.
Abu Dhabi basic papers set a six month wait for hospital care. That wait covers a named list of serious conditions there. Unbroken earlier cover removes that wait as well. The basic package in the other emirates works the other way. u.ae states no waiting period for workers with chronic illness under that package.
Ask the insurer one plain question before you pay for any plan. How long must I wait before this plan pays for major dental work? Ask for the answer inside your policy summary.
What Dental Cover Leaves Out
The Dubai basic plan exclusion list names dental prostheses as outside services. The same list names orthodontic treatments as outside services too. Cosmetic healthcare services also sit on that Dubai outside list. Teeth whitening changes tooth colour and treats no disease. The two add-on lists in this guide name no implant work. They name no brace work for adults or children. A plan pays only for the work its own list names. Read the outside list with the same care as the benefit list.
Steps to Add Dental Cover
Bolo Asan lists the steps in the order plans run. Group plan members hold one paper right under the Abu Dhabi manual. The insurer must give your employer your card and your policy summary. Your employer must pass that summary to you in person. The summary prints the benefits, the outside list and the clinic network.
- Find your table of benefits or your policy summary
- Look for a dental line inside that paper
- Note the renewal date of your plan
- Ask the plan owner for a dental benefit
- Ask about the yearly dental limit
- Ask about your share at each visit
- Ask for the dental clinic list
- Ask about approval rules and the start date
- Check the new summary after the change lands
- Keep the summary safe with your insurance card
The plan owner is your employer for a work group plan. The plan owner is you for a plan you buy yourself. Ask the insurer for the updated summary in every case.
How Bolo Asan Reads the Real Cost
An added dental benefit costs more than the premium alone. Your real cost has two parts each year. Part one is the extra premium for the dental benefit. Part two is your share at the dentist across the year. Add both parts and you see the true yearly cost. Compare that total with the cash price of your normal dental care. Our guide to UAE health insurance plans compares plan levels across the country.
Here is one made-up example with invented numbers. The example only shows the math. Say the extra premium is AED 300 for one year. Say one cleaning bill is AED 200 at the clinic. A 30 percent share leaves AED 60 in your hands to pay. Your year total becomes AED 360 with the premium inside. Without cover, that same cleaning costs AED 200 in cash. Now say a root canal bill is AED 1,500 in this example. Your 30 percent share is AED 450 for that one treatment. One big treatment can change the whole year math fast.
Dental Cover for Your Family
In Dubai, a sponsor insures dependents when an employer does not. One Sukoon condition guards fairness inside its family plan. Family cover in that plan must include every family member in Dubai. The rule names a wife and children on valid residence visas. A parent cannot pick one child and skip another under that plan.
In Abu Dhabi, the employer duty reaches the family directly. That duty covers one spouse and three children under 18. Children use the benefit for checks, cleaning and fillings. Brace work sits outside every dental list in this guide.
If You Hold Thiqa Cover
Thiqa is the Abu Dhabi government health programme for UAE nationals. u.ae says Thiqa gives full medical coverage to its members. The cover also reaches non-nationals under a UAE national family sponsor. Members join and renew through the Thiqa website or the Thiqa app. Daman runs the provider network behind the Thiqa card. Your Thiqa plan summary holds the dental line for your cover. Check that summary before you book any dental visit.
If an Insurer Refuses Your Dental Claim
Read the refusal letter against your own benefits table first. Match the refused item against the outside list in your summary. Dubai runs a channel for insurance complaints and feedback. u.ae names that channel the iPROMeS platform for Dubai insurance services. The Central Bank of the UAE supervises the whole insurance sector. Its rulebook holds the rules for insurers and insurance brokers.
Questions to Ask Before You Pay
Take these questions to your insurer or your human resources team.
- What is my yearly dental limit per person?
- What share do I pay at each dental visit?
- Which dental clinics sit inside my plan network?
- Does the plan need approval before root canal work?
- When does my dental benefit start?
- Does one limit cover my family or each person alone?
- What dental work sits fully outside this plan?
Mistakes That Waste Money
Bolo Asan sees the same five mistakes in plan after plan.
- Booking a dentist outside the plan clinic list
- Starting big dental work before approval arrives
- Reading the main plan limit and missing the dental limit
- Hiding an old tooth problem on the application form
- Asking for a change after the renewal date passes
The Sukoon papers refuse cover for hidden health problems. Honest answers on the form protect your later claims.
FAQs
Does my basic plan pay for a filling?
A filling counts as routine care in plan language. The basic plan tables pay for teeth and gums only in a medical emergency. A dental benefit is the part that pays for fillings.
How much dental cover can a plan add?
Each plan sets its own figure for the year. One Dubai plan table sets AED 500 for each person each year. One Abu Dhabi plan module sets AED 4,500 for each person each year. Your policy summary prints the figure for your own plan.
Can I add dental cover in the middle of a plan year?
Plan papers tie benefits to the policy term. The documents in this guide show benefit changes at purchase or renewal. Only your insurer or employer can confirm a mid-year change. Ask them before you count on any mid-year switch.
Who pays for dental cover for Dubai staff?
Dubai employers pay the full premium for each employee. The law bars them from taking that money from salaries. A dental benefit inside the staff plan rides on that same premium. Dependents follow a different duty, and the sponsor pays there.
Does dental cover pay for braces?
Braces sit on the Dubai outside list for basic services. Neither add-on list in this guide names brace work. Ask the insurer in writing before any brace work starts.
Does dental cover pay for cleaning?
Yes, the lists in this guide name cleaning work. Daman allows scaling and polishing once per year inside its module. The Sukoon list names scaling inside its dental benefit.
What share will I pay at the dentist?
Your plan sets the share as a percent of the bill. One Dubai table takes 30 percent from you per visit. One Abu Dhabi module pays 80 percent and leaves 20 percent with you. Your summary prints your exact share before you book.
Do I need approval before a root canal?
Both plan documents in this guide ask for approval first. Your clinic sends the treatment plan to the insurer for a yes. Emergency care flips the order of those steps. Daman wants news of emergency care within 24 hours.
Does Thiqa cover dental care?
u.ae calls Thiqa full medical coverage for its members. Bolo Asan found no dental figure on the u.ae Thiqa lines. The Thiqa summary holds the exact dental line for each member. Open your Thiqa account or app and read that line first.
What happens when my dental limit runs out?
The plan stops paying dental bills for that year. You pay the dentist in full from that point on. The limit starts again with the new policy year.
Can I use any dentist I like?
The Sukoon table pays only at its named dental clinics. A clinic outside the list leaves the bill with you. Check the network list before you book a chair.
How Bolo Asan Checked This Guide
Bolo Asan opened the u.ae health insurance pages first. Our team then read the ISAHD answers on Dubai insurance. We read the Abu Dhabi insurers manual from the Department of Health. We also read real plan tables from Daman and Sukoon. Every figure in this guide comes from one of those pages. Prices for added dental benefits change from plan to plan. No single price in this guide fits every reader.
